These days, I leave home at dark, work 9-10 hours, come home, try to get a ride in before dark and recover on the couch till I go to bed before 10pm. Some days I miss my "early" 9am shift, driving around looking for a feature, chasing news and hanging out in coffee shops till Scott or Max calls.... PS we didn't get the house.

Too late? We looked at a house this afternoon that had an offer put in on it that morning... agent said they were still accepting offers... nothing like a rushed decision.

Today was racing in Raleigh, my third race in 25 hours. I had a good start and felt strong most of the race.... still a mid-pack finish.

My view of the races from the back of the Turtle. Today I raced two races, my first race started really bad as I jumped back on after the firs remount, my saddle tilted up so I couldn't jump on or sit and pedal. No problem, I have a second race today... I had a better race but was tired from the first one, mid-pack.

Saying goodbye to Henry. The last if the original NC cats.
When we lived in Fayetteville 14 years ago, one winter morning, Henry was a kitten and sleeping in a potted plant on our porch. My wife walked down to his owner's home and asked why it was outside and was told the cat's poop smelled bad (turns out Henry didn't do milk) and so it was not allowed in.... my wife asked if she could find it a new home and was told "sure".... my wife walked back to my house, picked up the cat, put it inside.... the search was over. Henry was unique cat, hated ceiling fans (really anything moving over him) and was "high maintenance" but a loving cat. PS he was not the only cat my wife "stole" from that neighbor!

SO Sam and I sleep in the Turtle for the first time, temps overnight were in the 40s and we were very comfortable. In the morning we explored more FS roads and creeks before heading toward the town of Black Mountain the the Pisgah Brewery for CX race #2 of the year.

Sunday was my second CX race of the year, so a couple of pictures of me by Sam and mine of the B race. The coarse was not technical and short, so lots of laps.... I started well and was top 10 going into the first sweeping turn, a mtn biker on my right hit the rocks and veered across the whole field and I lost a couple of spots, then the third turn another mtn bike (see a trend?) chopped me badly and I lost a spot... I passed a couple and was in ~12 or so most of the race but faded badly over the last 1.5 laps to finish 17th of the 27 finishers!

The rest of the day we drove around, did the Devil's Tail (Hwy 80) - http://www.thedevilnc80.com/about80.html - 12 miles of twisting fun on a motorcycle or sports car, but a 5,000 truck.... OK it was fun. We did it down then up!
We finally drove our first mile on the Blue Ridge Parkway to get to Mt. Mitchell, of course we stopped at overlooks. On the way down Mt. Mitchell, a motorcycle and car collided, so we had a long delay as two life flights were brought in. Luckily we dinner in the back of the turtle and sat on the tailgate and had dinner

Sam and I headed to the mountains to chase fall foliage, waterfalls and bike races.
We drove a bunch of dirt roads and hiked two waterfalls. Setrock Creek Falls (the detail)and Roaring Fork Falls (full picture) were both very close to our campsite

Finally. The first cyclocross race of the year! At the SECCA in Winston-Salem.
The weather (as discussed yesterday) was even cyclocross like. My day started off wrong, I ran some errands in the morning and fell behind, I figured the family wasn't interested, so I took off without warm cloths or race fueling... a quick stop at a grocery store solved one of the problems. The weather kept the field smaller than usual (only 30 or so Cat 4 and single speeders starting together)and I choose the third line, but suffered as a SS in front of me couldn't climb as fast as I was... I dabbed badly on the first root area cause I was off line in a crowd and fell back but then had a blast racing those around me. I was caught in the last lap by someone and decided he wasn't getting around me, and caught the guy in front of me, but started my sprint late.... I could have passed him if I was worried about behind me. Results still are not up, but I should be mid-pack.

This weekend we decided to check the progress of fall foliage in western North Carolina... and ended up in eastern Tennessee. I had heard of Unaka Mountain, it features a couple of good hikes, waterfalls, overlooks and a fun 14 mile forest service road to test the Land Cruiser on. Best laid plans and all... the fun FS road was gated, as soon as we started hiking it started raining and the further up we went, the more fog covered us. The one image is the huge overlook on Unaka Mtn., supposed to be able to see Mt. Mitchell. We also planned to camp, but an updated 70% chance of thunderstorms starting at 4am convinced me to drive back home.
