Good morning 2013! Sam and I slept in the truck (very well I might add) and woke to a rainy day, no mtn biking but we slept in and went home for New Year's Day dinner and watching South Carolina beat Michighan.

Deb had to work tonight so Sam and I loaded up the Turtle and went camping in Uwharrie National Forest.

Sam and I headed to the mountains to chase fall foliage, waterfalls and bike races. We drove a bunch of dirt roads and hiked two waterfalls. Setrock Creek Falls (the detail)and Roaring Fork Falls (full picture) were both very close to our campsite

My "friends" decided they needed to "salute" the ultimate expedition vehicle ever sold in the US (a 1993 Toyota FZJ80 Land Cruiser, named The Turtle by Sam)... and we even messed with the local children.

We escaped the heat wave and camped outside Boone, quiet camp site and a creek to cool our wine!

We headed for the mountains for the end of Sam's spring break. After we set up camp, Sam and I drove around looking for sunset pictures on Fontana Lake.

Day 3 -
I decided to not bike today and cleaned the truck and trailer. Now I want to go camping. I hope this warm weather sticks around!

For Deb's birthday weekend I decided to take the family on a romantic camping trip to Spartanburg, SC. As chance would have it, there was a cyclocross race there too and I raced CX for the first time since last year's New York State championships and the crash that ended my season. The race was as I expected... I will have to race myself into shape again this year. I did wear a heart rate monitor. Fun data - I maxed out at 180 bpm and stayed above 165 for the full 40 mins.... that evening we made pie iron calzones and warmed ourselves against a 40 degree night!
