Red Fork Falls, Unaka Mountain, TN.

The hike to Red Fork Falls.

Oct. 6, 2012 Part 3

This weekend we decided to check the progress of fall foliage in western North Carolina... and ended up in eastern Tennessee. I had heard of Unaka Mountain, it features a couple of good hikes, waterfalls, overlooks and a fun 14 mile forest service road to test the Land Cruiser on. Best laid plans and all... the fun FS road was gated, as soon as we started hiking it started raining and the further up we went, the more fog covered us. The one image is the huge overlook on Unaka Mtn., supposed to be able to see Mt. Mitchell. We also planned to camp, but an updated 70% chance of thunderstorms starting at 4am convinced me to drive back home.

The hike up Mt. Van Hovenberg. In the back of the pond picture is the summit, and after you go over the top, there is the start of the 1932 bobsled Olympic track, cool little history.

Riding over the Lin Cove Viaduct and the hike to Upper Creek Falls. We used the Moon North Carolina Handbook to find lunch, Famous Louise's Rockhouse Restaurant, homemade pimento cheese and the dinning room is split at the three county lines on which it sits.

I am very proud of Sam, she was nervous about the ladders (going up and down) and some of the ledges with long falls, but she never paused or whined. The teenagers are a group we kept leap frogging. It took Sam and me 2.5 hours to travel about 2.5 miles.
