April 22, 2012 Part 2
Camp #2, Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area near Sunset, SC, I was the only one in the camp ground and at $10 a night, worth the stay for hot showers rather than free primitive camping in Jocassee Gorges. The set-up started with a hail storm. After dinner I wondered around the shores of Jocassee Lake looking for sunset pictures, but didn't have much luck.

Stump Jump 2012. I had a great race, started about fourth and worked my way to leading before the first mile was over... I led the rest of the first lap but faded to 3rd. After my race I played with the pictures of later race starts.

Stump Jump pre-ride complete. I love these trails, I might have over done the recon ride with 2.5 hours in the saddle, but the last 45 minutes were the best as I rode the coarse backwards to find a lost 9 year old who was supposed to be on a different course... There were some happy parents (they had already called 911) Campsite 1 was primitive camping on the backside of Croft State Park (next to the capped landfill)

Packed and ready for 9 days on the road. I should have enough food for 5 days or so. Mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and fishing are planned.

After we left camp, I had looked at a ride choice on the Blue Ridge Parkway and find the highest point on the BRP at just over 6,000 feet. We planned an out and back ride and most of my rides on the BRP go up and down, so when we started at Rabb Knob Overlook at 3,725 feet. We climbed, and climbed and climbed... an hour and 20 minutes of climbing before we reached the turn around at 6,053 : O
Look at the GPS log of the ride, the two speed spikes must have been the tunnel and the lost of signal, I never hit 400 mph. My max speed was 46 MPH.

Saturday:
Sam and I started the day with a bike ride in Tsali, then the family hiked along the lake trail, including finding this old homestead and a mule shoe that I think was from when they forested the land before the damn was finished. Clay and Kay joined us and we rode the other half of the Tsali trails (Mouse and Thompson) - after dinner Clay and I rode Thompson on a night ride.
Great day!

Sam and Maggie braved the cold waters to boogie board. Freeman Park allows free camping on the beach, but you can not tow a trailer so we had to stay in the state park... next trip, we will be sleeping on the beach! Animals seen this trip, wild starfish, deer (less than 6 feet away), Maggie stepped on a snake (we saw it's escape), dolphins and jellyfish.

A See Rock City barn and on the podium (5th) after a great race. See yesterday's pictures of the views, cause I didn't see anything today... I went as hard as I could. I was in third at almost half way when I got caught by 4th, I could out climb him, but he was dropping me on the way down and pulled away.... then I was passed by someone going so fast, I assumed he was a fast guy from a later wave, but nope. I stayed at it as hard as I could go and had a blast. That night my mom and I played some at the casino in Cherokee, I did better in the woods.

Today was spend pre-riding the race course in Tsali in western NC, man this place is awesome! My lap will have three steep climbs with fast and flowing single track between them. The image of the guys climbing one is pro and one an expert... look at their body language... of coarse when they "caught up to me" they called me "sir"... That hurt ; )
I tried to ride with them to the next hill.... they were so smooth going down.... I have a long way to go!
