On the way home from David's we took to the blue highways and visited Centralia, PA. In 1962 a fire was accidentally started in the town dump and it spread to a vein of underground coal. It burned for years and it seems not much was done until in the 1980s, a gas station attendant checking his tank's levels noticed the stick was real hot, he lowered a thermometer and found the gas was over 120 degrees. That brought national attention and government money. But the fire burned on, moving down the hill along highway 61. (the cracked highway) The government eventuality bought out almost all but about 7 families still living there. As you can see, it is now a ghost town, empty streets run nowhere, smoke and steam still rises from holes all over. Scientists say the fire could burn for another century.

The season is over. I will not turn these wheels again this year with a stomach of anger. My back pain and December surgery means I will not be on the bike again till 2011...
ps
2010 Tour de France. Stage 15, climbing the Port de Bales. Andy Schleck is in yellow. He attacks and then (Noooooo!) drops his chain. Contador counter-attacks while Andy's trying to recover from the mechanical. Really? Many said Contador shouldn't have attacked. Andy thought so, too, and gave us all the best quote of the 2010 Tour, "My stomach is full of anger and I want to take my revenge."

9. This was my 9th weekend in-a-row racing cyclocross and I finished 9th. The race was at Kissing Bridge Ski Area, on the warm-up lap I thought I was in trouble. I didn't feel like racing, my back hurts, and I don't like this course. The course was a long fast straight to start, a couple of muddy dips and steep short bumps, then up the mountain (part of it) and across it (through more mud) then fast descent and zig-zag about 10 times. Repeat 6 or so laps. Bang off we go...
I had a couple of thoughts while racing today. About two months ago, my legs were numb and cramping during races, today I felt good, despite the stupid mtn. I am not a great bike handler, but damn I am better than the guys around me, I picked up so many spots today on the technical parts. And finally I love the catch... I spent 3 laps or so reeling in 9th place, once I got to his wheel, I had to think when to make my move. Go too early and I am the rabbit, too late and he grows confident he can beat me. In the end he made the choice for me, he was slow through a corner leading to the bell lap, I took him there, and hammered the straight to gap him. In fact I hammered so hard through the whole lap, I almost caught 8th. I would have caught him in another 3 turns. Great day and course!

Happy Halloween.
Today was also the New York State cyclocross championships.
I had another call up and started on the front row. I had a great start (it was a slow start) and after a long start on asphalt, I was third as we entered the first left hand turn. Second place cut wide right and came right across my front wheel (the course was wide enough, the guy was a Richard) and down I go on the asphalt, at the front of the field, I get back up in about 14th, and caught a few guys and got passed by a few for 17th on the day. It was a great course, with the one turn you see, the fast way was to grab the top tube with one hand and the tree with the other. As you slid on the mud, swing the bike around and let it's momentum pull you up the hill. Post race damage: bent derailleur or something, scratches on brand new pedals, road rash (luckily not bad) on my back, wrist and both legs.
